Exploring the gulf!

Now that the Atlantic storm has passed the wind on the gulf has decreased.  The sun continues to shine with warmer temperatures.

On Wednesday we drove west 22 miles to Fort Morgan.   Completed in 1834, Fort Morgan was active during four wars the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. The fort is most famous for its role in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay. 

 

 

 

 

 

Just a few miles from Fort Morgan is Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.

 

 

 

We saw some beautiful views as we hiked on he Pine Beach Trail.  It's tough hiking in sand!

 



 

 

 

 

The wind was blowing but somehow these birds rested on the grass.

 

 

This morning we met a park ranger at the state park pier for a talk about fishing, birding, and rebuilding of the pier that was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.  Many peope were out fishing and "red" fish seemed to be the catch of the day!

The birds wanted their share of the fish but didn't seem to be as successful as the fisherman.

After the pier talk we biked back to the park, packed lunch, and headed out on a bike path we discovered yesterday.  We rode about 25 miles and got back around 3pm. 

 

More and more campers are coming and we have neighbors.  One couple is from Germany.  They are on a 6 month RV trip traveling around the USA!  13,000 miles later they are heading to Florida and then up the east coast before flying home!  A once in a lifetime trip for them!

 

Tomorrow we drive to Pensacola, FL for the Blue Angels Homecoming Show at the Naval Air Station!!
