Picture Rocks National Lakeshore

Miners Castle

Picture Rocks National Lakeshore “is dedicated to preserving a nationally significant portion of the Great Lakes shore-line.  Five square miles of pristine sand dunes perched atop 300-foot sand banks rise abruptly at the shore of Lake Superior”.  We are camping in Munising, MI and have already enjoyed the views of Lake Superior!

Our first stop was at Miners Castle for the view from the overlook.  A cloudless blue sky, a strong north wind off of the lake, and temperatures around 72 accompanied us as we took off.  The Lake Superior Trail follows the bluffs along the lake, heads down to the beach, and back up to the bluffs again.  Hiking in the sand is much more difficult than hiking on soil or rocks.  The beach was crowded with families andt the water must have been fairly warm as people were swimming and jumping the waves.    It was a wonderful hike to begin our stay here.

This campground is very crowded but the sites are large with lots of trees.  No problem getting into the site as we have a pull-thru as opposed to a back in.  It has been chilly the past few nights and we have had to turn the heat on.  Today we will hike around Chapel Lake, which will include a stop at the beach and at Chapel Rock.  We have tickets for the 4pm Picture Rocks Cruise to see the cliffs.  We will be on the boat about 2 ½ hours and cover about 13 miles of the shoreline.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate as all of the cruises were cancelled yesterday due to the winds.  Phil should have some time this evening to download photos!
