Yesterday we decided to take a rest from hiking. We drove around the area and visited the small town of Jerome. The town is perched on the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill on Mingus Mountain about 30 minutes from Sedona. It was founded in 1876 and had a peek population of 15,000 by 1919 thanks to the cooper mining. There were numerous fires over the decades and houses sliping down the slopes but a some orginal buildings stand and have been restored.
Today the population is 500. There is a thriving art colony and is the 3rd largest tourist attraction in AZ. The views from the top encompasses much of the Verde Valley with the red rocks of Sedona to the north.
The day was quiet overcast but the sun did come out in the afternoon, With our limited traveling, Phil and I have never experienced art galleries and gift shops like these. One of our favorites was Nellieblyscoped. The largest kalidscope store in the world!!!!!!!
