welcome center. Phil picked up a brochure for Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve near Atmore. The reserve was 8 miles off the interstate and very quite. We even had time for a walk before dinner.
Friday we had a short, 2 hour drive to the park. I thought there would be a long line of RVers waiting to check in but the park is almost empty. A very nice lady at the Gulf Shore welcome center, told us that the Snowbirds arrive on Nov. 15th. We have a wonderful site, near the front of the park, that will give us about a 30 minute walk to the beach.
Some of you might wonder how we chose this park. We stayed here when we were following Mark on his bike ride across the USA this past spring. We liked the large sites, 18 mile paved biking or walking trail, and the park's 2 1/2 miles of beach for walking. There are 400 sites but with so many little roads and cul-de-sacs we don't think we will notice.

After we set up the campsite we took a break and walked on the beach. It was a beautiful warm day.
So today is Saturday and the chilly air from the Atlantic storm has reached the gulf. All of the weather persons are talking about the cold temperatures for the next few days. Mid 60's doesn't seem to bad to us. This morning I woke up early and headed to the beach for the sunrise and then a walk.
After a stop at the Welcome Center we drove to a near-by town for the Elberta Sausage Festival. Thousands of people attend this bi-annual event and every street in this small town was packed with cars. The sausage was delicious and Phil said the German Potato Salad was also quite tasty. Several bands were playing and there was an arts/craft show with 250 booths.
Then a stop at the grocery store and a 17 mile bike ride into the chilly wind completed our day. Now the wind is gusting around 25 miles per hour. We rolled in the awning and hope the screened in room doesn't blow away overnight! Phil is watching the baseball world series and I'm going to read a
book!

ReplyDeleteGlad you arrived safely. Hope your weather isn't affected a whole lot by the hurricane, etc. or at least not for long. It was under 40 degrees this a.m., so 60 doesn't sound too bad!
